Advanced Biblical Theology

A one-semester advanced course in biblical theology - tracing named theological storylines across the whole biblical canon rather than covering the Bible book by book - for students who have already completed an introductory biblical theology course. The course's own twelve chapters (plus an introduction) are sized independently of the Korean original's twelve chapters and 121 lectures; both cover comparable ground with very different pacing and depth per lecture.

Chapter 1 covers biblical theology's advanced architecture: how story, theme, and literary form integrate, and the live methodological question of whether biblical theology needs (or should resist) a single unifying center. Chapter 2 traces the kingdom-of-God storyline from creation's cosmic kingship through Israel's monarchy, the prophets' hope, and Jesus's already-and-not-yet proclamation. Chapter 3 traces covenant theology's structure and development, engaging the live three-way debate among covenant theology, dispensationalism, and progressive covenantalism. Chapter 4 traces the messianic storyline's threefold office (king, priest, prophet) and the Suffering Servant. Chapter 5 traces the atonement's multiple biblical trajectories - sacrifice, victory, healing, union - and the live debate over whether penal substitution, Christus Victor, or a multi-model ('kaleidoscopic') account should organize the doctrine. Chapters 6-7 trace temple theology across two chapters: presence and dwelling from Eden through the tabernacle and Solomon's temple, then expansion and fulfillment from Christ's incarnation through the church and the new creation's templeless city. Chapter 8 traces the Holy Spirit's storyline from creation through Pentecost, engaging the continuationist/cessationist debate over the Spirit's gifts today. Chapter 9 traces the theology of the people of God, engaging the three-way debate over Israel and the church fairly. Chapter 10 traces new-creation theology, engaging the debate over cosmic continuity versus destruction-and-re-creation, including the Greek textual question in 2 Peter 3:10. Chapter 11 integrates biblical and systematic theology as complementary disciplines, with real cases of each correcting the other. Chapter 12 synthesizes the whole course into a single reading of Scripture as one unfolding story, closing with guided practice reading one biblical book biblical-theologically.

Scripture is quoted from the World English Bible. Readers are mostly not native English speakers, and a large share are Catholic or Orthodox rather than Protestant, so contested doctrinal questions (the atonement's organizing model, Israel and the church, cessationism) are presented with real representatives of each named position rather than a single default answer. This course assumes the vocabulary and basic storylines an introductory biblical theology course already covered; it does not re-teach them from scratch, though each chapter states plainly what earlier grounding it assumes.
