A one-semester introduction to the New Testament: its canon, transmission, historical background, and every one of its twenty-seven books, read book by book with attention to authorship, structure, theology, and the major critical questions each book raises. Chapters 1-3 cover canon, text, Second Temple Judaism and the Greco-Roman world, and the methods of modern New Testament study. Chapters 4-9 cover the Gospels - their introduction (including the Synoptic Problem), Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and the quest for the historical Jesus. Chapter 10 covers Acts. Chapters 11-22 cover the Pauline and Pastoral letters, opening with the authorship debate that divides Paul's thirteen letters into undisputed and disputed groups, then working through Romans to Titus. Chapters 23-28 cover Hebrews and the general epistles - James, 1-2 Peter, Jude, and 1-3 John. Chapters 29-30 cover Revelation, including the four classic approaches to reading it. Chapter 31 closes with the New Testament canon's formation history and its unity with the Old Testament.
Scripture is quoted from the World English Bible. Where serious, faithful scholarship disagrees - on the Synoptic Problem, the authorship of the Pastoral Epistles and other disputed letters, Hebrews' authorship, 2 Peter's authorship, Revelation's authorship and interpretation, and other genuinely contested questions - this course names who holds what rather than picking a winner for the reader.
