The first five and a half centuries of the church, from Pentecost to the fall of the Western empire and Gregory the Great.
This course follows two movements at once. One is expansion: a small community in Jerusalem spreading through the Roman world, first because it was scattered by persecution and then because it went deliberately, and holding its ground through three centuries in which confessing Christ could cost a life. The other is definition: the slow, contested work of deciding what the church actually believed — the canon, the creeds and the office of bishop taking shape against Gnosticism, Marcion and Montanus, and then the Trinity and the person of Christ argued out at Nicaea, Constantinople, Ephesus and Chalcedon. The course ends where the empire that framed both movements gives way, and the church finds itself holding responsibilities the state has dropped.
It is written for lay leaders and ministers who want to know where the words they say every Sunday came from, and what they cost. The period it covers is the shared inheritance of Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant Christians alike, and the lectures try to state each tradition's reading of it in the form that tradition would recognise.
Scripture is quoted from the World English Bible. Technical terms are kept and explained where they first appear rather than left to a glossary. The introduction says plainly what the course leaves out.
