No doctrine arrived by parachute. Every phrase in the creeds you can recite was argued into existence by people who did not have the words yet and had to find them under real pressure - a council, a schism, a persecution, a text somebody was reading wrong.

This course follows eight doctrines - the Trinity, the person of Christ, sin and grace, the church and its sacraments, Scripture, the last things, and the modern doctrinal landscape itself - from their first controversies to their twentieth-century re-openings. It is organized by doctrine, not by century, so each chapter reads as one long argument rather than a survey of dates.

Eight chapters, thirty-three lectures. Scripture is quoted from the World English Bible. Every live dispute this field still carries - justification, the Lord's Supper, the millennium, biblical inerrancy - is named as a live dispute, not settled by the syllabus.
