Foundations: An Introduction to Christian Doctrine

Most believers who have sat under years of preaching can repeat individual Bible verses and feel the weight of a well-told story, but have never been given the connected shape of what Christians actually believe and why - so when a real question arrives (why did Jesus have to die rather than simply forgive; how can God be one and three; why does a good God allow suffering; what actually separates a cult from a church), the answer that surfaces is a feeling rather than a reasoned position. This course exists to give that connected shape: not a list of rules, but a map of belief sturdy enough to hold real questions, including the ones with no fully settled answer.

Nine chapters (an introduction plus eight): how Christians know what they claim to know (revelation and Scripture); who God is, one God in three persons; what it means to be human and what sin actually is; the person and work of Jesus Christ; how salvation happens, from grace to a lifetime of slow change; the Holy Spirit and the ordinary shape of a Christian life; what to do when faith is shaken by doubt, suffering, or unanswered prayer, and where cults and heresies actually diverge from historic Christianity; and the church, its sacraments, and the last things. Most chapters end in a 'Say It' lab - putting that chapter's doctrine into the reader's own plain words - and three chapters carry an 'Open Question' lecture on a point where faithful believers have always disagreed.

Scripture is quoted from the World English Bible. Where serious and faithful traditions disagree - Scripture's relationship to church tradition and teaching authority, how the Lord's Supper and baptism actually work, how divine sovereignty and human choice relate, whether the miraculous gifts continue today, how to read the millennium and the timing of Christ's return - this course names who holds what rather than choosing for the reader. It assumes no prior training in theology and no particular denomination; a large share of its readers are Catholic or Orthodox, and no quiz answer in this course requires only one tradition's position to be true.
